The AHS is Seeking Artifact Donations
The Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver is searching for good local artifacts of either a historical and/or geological nature.
As plans for its Culver area history museum proceed, the organization is seeking donations from the community of artifacts pertaining to Culver's history in the following categories:
Agriculture, Native Americans, people of Culver's past, African-American history of Culver, sports and recreation, hotels, businesses, Culver's downtown area, geography and geology of the area, Culver's involvement in past wars, Culver Academy, and cottages and life on Lake Maxinkuckee. The Society is looking for objects and artifacts that relate directly to the history of the area, be they 3-D objects, clothing, souvenirs from days past, print material, photos, and the like.
The AHS has contracted with museum designer Ted Swigon, of Chicago Scenic Studios, to design the exhibits and displays for the museum, which will be located on the ground floor of the original 1915 Carnegie library area of the Culver-Union Twp. Public Library, 107 N. Main Street in downtown Culver. Easterday Construction Company has renovated the space to prepare for the implementation of exhibits, upgrading the walls, flooring, ceiling, and other attributes of the room.
Swigon, with input from the Antiquarian Society and the community, has come up with drawings and models showing layout scenarios of the museum and its exhibits. Construction of elements of the museum are now underway.
Though the Society cannot appraise the monetary value of donated items, any artifact donation would be tax deductible, as the AHS is a 501-C3, non-profit organization. Donations made to the museum become the property of the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, and the Society may not accept each item offered, but will discuss donated items with its Accessions Committee for consideration. Those with items to donate may call Marizetta Kenney,
AHS Center for Culver History and Museum Manager, through the
Culver-Union Twp. Public Library at
(574) 842-2941, or email at
marizettakenney@yahoo.com. Items may also be brought in-person to Marizetta at the library building, Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 2pm.
